Flagrant 2 or Pure Malice? Breaking Down the Fever vs Mercury Controversy

The fist to the throat SAGA

Oh boy a topic I didn't want to discuss; but giving how this issue is spreading I will dip my toe in this cess pool of madness.

Let's first delve in what happened and I will then give my opinion:

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Indiana Fever in which Caitlin Clark plays was playing a basketball game against the team Phoenix Mercury. In a specific play Caitlin was walking the ball down offensively towards the middle of the paint. In transition she tripped on a Mercury player in which there several Mercury players surrounding her who were defensively trying to trap. Caitlin ended up falling on the floor and the Mercury players swarmed on the floor to retrieve the ball. The ball ended up rolling to an Indiana Fever player on the perimeter.

The spotlight is what happened on the floor with Caitlin Clark in the midst of her being on the floor during all the movement surrounding her for the defensive ball takeaway. Alyssa Thomas with Phoenix Mercury seemed to have put her fist on Caitlin Clarks neck area (THE THROAT) while she was still immobile on the floor.  (oh goodness) Well to no surprise no foul called nor flagrant foul called by the referees. (Which happens in the NBA also, just saying).

In a retro review of the play by the WNBA they have decided to upgrade the play to a flagrant foul 2, citing unnecessarily reckless contact to Caitlin neck area. The review called for a one (1) game suspension of Alyssa Thomas.  The Mercury team nor coach seems to be very happy with the outcome with them allegedly using Michelle Obama quotes and free Alyssa Thomas chants. (insanity)

Well here goes my toe, Look I am one to admit I am not a big fan of the WNBA, I don't know why but I just can't seem to get into it as much as other people. I think the league is trying everything they can to bring in a fan base to the league. I think the constant conversation regarding Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese is something that they are actively pursuing to bring in attendees and viewers, but at what cost. See the flagrant foul that was accessed to Alyssa Thomas received was justified, if you ask me, it should have been a little more; just to send a message. What is happening is the narrative that is being pushed is racism among players. Why do we have to go there?

As you recall there was a (bad meaning one of the greatest) white players in the NBA by the name of Larry Bird. He came in the league and ruffled feathers just because he was just that good. Now in the background some may have been disgruntled because they couldn't understand how this white guy going to come in on the hardwoods and dominate games. But it was nothing but respect and remember that was in the year of the 80's. We are now in the 2000's and we are now pushing racist narratives around everywhere. Is it really facilitating enjoyment and viewers of the WNBA and if so at what cost.

Referees are horrible, they are horrible just about in every sport. NBA Finals the referees were the worst, I have written time and time again about them. Players themselves do dirty plays, and their incentives are winning at all costs, which happens in every sport. The rule of the game is to dismantle a team's best player, and Caitlin is the face of that right now. So, she is getting the blunt of all of the dirty plays and aggressiveness.

My advice is I hope Caitlin does not feed into the narratives and take it as a badge of honor. Caitlin is coming into the league and ruffling feathers just like a familiar Bird I have seen before. It's a sport people, it's about competition and winning.

Let's just enjoy the game
