BEHIND THE JERSEY: JA MORANT LIFE, CHALLENGES AND ANTICIPATED COMEBACK

 JA MORANT HIS-STORY

Born Temtrius Jamal "Ja" Morant was born in Dalzell South to Tee and Jamie Morant. Both his parents were athletic and played basketball, mother in high school and day played in college. So of course, a basketball star was born in Ja Morant. In college Tee Morant played with a well-known basketball player Ray Allen which has gone on to win two NBA Championship rings with Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.

Ja father Tee Morant was very active in his son's life; he made a pivotal decision to leave his professional oversees basketball career to work as a barber and to be in his son's life.

Ja Morant in high school wasn't on anyone's spectrum. He was unranked and unnoticed. His dad took charge of his physical conditioning and training. The training was what you call unconventional training which is what makes him unique today. The training consisted of jumping off of tractor tires in his back yard, strengthening his legs and jumping abilities. Which is why watching him in the game you see his high-flying acrobatic moves at the rim.

Ja Morant was one of those meant to be moments, when enlisting in a summer camp in an adjacent gym. He was playing and dominating a game of a regular pickup game of basketball when the assistant coach for Murray State University, on his way to a concession stand noticed Ja skills. In that moment James Kaine, the assistant coach knew then he discovered something special.

Ja was offered a scholarship at Murray State University; he accepted and became unbelievable being the first player in a season to average 20 points and 10 assists in NCAA history.

Ja was picked number 2 in the draft to Memphis Grizzlies in 2019. He was able to totally change the teams dynamic; he made them popular with the new generation. He had an edge, and his acrobatics, and high-powered leaping dunks were captivating. Ja presented something fresh a nuance that made him the face of the franchise.

Then....Ja seemed to take a different trajectory, almost movie like: He got in trouble where he was accused of punching a teenager at his home playing a game of basketball. Then he got in trouble with the NBA for being at a strip club brandishing a gun on social media. That act within itself got Ja an 8-game suspension. If that wasn't enough he, did it again, brandishing a gun on social media and he got a 25-game suspension.

After he returned to the Grizzlies, he had a season ending injury shoulder injury during practice and a UCL injury to his elbow.

Ja Morant has expressed his frustrations with the Grizzlies with the lack of minutes he has played and the lack of support. Ja Morant frustrations have spilled over in the locker room causing friction. Ja attitude had led him to an in-house suspension from the team being labeled as detrimental. The team itself is in a quandary; Ja can't seem to stay healthy and with his antics is he even tradable. Ja Morant himself has stated that he needs to start prioritizing his mental health.

Ja has used his platform to do good he has invested millions of dollars of his own money in his community in Memphis to the Rise Center, a shelter that provides job training and provides housing for homeless youth.

Next season I guess we will see with awaited breath what happens to Ja Morants basketball future. People generally love a good comeback story and this one I will be rooting for. Ja has an amazing talent he has had some downfalls and he has some triumphs. But what is the use of a butterfly if it's contained you can't see the beauty until it fly's high above the rim.
