Tennis Player: Frances Tiafoe Story (BIG FOE)

The Americans champion, the entertainer on the tennis circuit Frances Tiafoe.  I heard his story years ago and I was in awe and I wanted to share it with you all.

Frances Tiafoe was born in 1998 in Maryland with his twin brother Franklin. Tiafoe parents were Sierra Leonean immigrants who finally were able to escape the hardships of the civil war and Maryland ended up being their resting ground.

Tiafoe mother worked as a nurse working nights, while his father worked construction jobs in which was responsible for building the Junior Tennis Championship Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland. After the completion of the facility being built. The owners of the facility hired Frances's father as a full-time custodian at the facility. This decision was to be able to provide for the family and to save monetary and being able to watch his sons while their mother worked. Frances's father wanted to provide stability and structure keeping his sons out of the street a giving them a solid foundation. Frances Tiafoe's father was given a small office to live in while for eleven years Frances and his twin brother lived onsite at the tennis academy utilizing folding massage tables as a bed and sleeping quarters.

The tennis center became a daycare for the two boys, taking lessons at age 5 at the tennis center. Seeing wealthy kids taking tennis tutelage at the academy wearing expensive athletic clothing and gear while he was subject to hand me down attire and equipment but yet still yearning to learn all aspects of the game and wanting to belong. Tiafoe started to tune in watching players of yester year on TV mimicking their style of play and their ball striking and movement. Practicing like most inner-city youth pretending to play tennis by hitting the ball against a brick wall.

At the age 8 Coach Misha Kouznetsov noticed his love for tennis and began coaching him for free and navigated him through tennis juniors. Frances took his passion and huge interest in the game and used it as fuel and vessel to elevate his family financially.

Frances's resiliency is one to be respected, he became a top junior prospect winning the Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament at age 15 where he was ranked World number 2 and then turned professional at age 17. Frances won the ATP title at Delray Beach in 2018 being the youngest American to win the title since Andy Roddick in 2002. He has steadily made great strides in the tennis circuit once beating the dominant Rafael Nadal in the fourth round in the 2022 US Open and put on a show in the semifinals against Carlos Alcarez. Noticeably winning on the grass surface the Terra Wortman Open, which made him the first American to win the tournament and trophy in the history of the ATP 500 since 1993.

Frances has made his mark in our hearts and on the game, he is truly an entertainer on the court bringing high energy and purpose to the court. Frances is always one to watch for in any tournament and an all-in top tier competitor. There is no stopping his rise in the tennis game. And we here to see his continued success. Frances is a great story for any child or an adult.  While his humble beginnings have been noted, he planted a seed of growth, breaking past what people would utilize as a restraint he used it as fuel.
